Recipe: Sorrentino Cocktail with Limoncello and Gin

While my parents were out visiting us last week, we enjoyed our evening cocktail hour every night before dinner (living the luxe life, I know!).  While most of those evenings I spent enjoying a raspberry Aperol Spritz, on the final evening my Dad made us all a round of Sorrentino cocktails that I quite enjoyed.  Considering that this version of a Sorrentino is essentially a mixture of my two favorite liquors, limoncello and gin, this refreshing (and strong!) cocktail was the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day.  Slightly sweet, herbaceous, with a hint of sparkle, Sorrentino cocktails are about to become a regular on my cocktail rotation.

This recipe below is a wonderful base recipe, and it will result in a really nice cocktail.  If you want to dress this up even more, feel free to add a garnish of a lemon wedge or lemon twist to highlight the lemony/citrusy flavors, or garnish with a rosemary or thyme sprig to heighten the herbal notes.  Traditionally, Sorrentino cocktails use Campari and sweet vermouth instead of gin, but I have to say that the gin was really nice, and worked really well with the limoncello to add that herbal punch.  Other spins on this recipe that I found online include using lemon soda instead of seltzer water, adding a dash of fresh lemon or lime juice, or spiking with a little simple syrup for added sweetness.  While that all sounds delightful, the purity of this base recipe is enough for me.  But know that there are may options to customize this cocktail and make it your own!

Recipe down below, photo up top!  This is enough to make one cocktail, so repeat for as many drinks that you are planning to make!

Sorrentino Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz limoncello
  • 1 oz gin
  • 4 oz soda water or seltzer water (unflavored)
  • Serve over plenty of ice

Method:

  1. Add plenty of ice to a serving glass.  Pour the limoncello and gin into the glass over the ice, and stir to combine.
  2. Top with the unflavored soda/seltzer water, and stir again to fully combine everything together.
  3. Take a sip and enjoy!
