You Really Should Be Adding Extra Virgin Olive Oil to Your Ice Cream

Hold the chocolate sauce – I’m here for a drizzle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil on my ice cream.  I know it sounds hard to believe, but high quality ice cream and high quality olive oil are a pure match made in heaven. 

I first experienced this back at my old job as Test Kitchen Manager at the Sam’s Club World Headquarters, where an Italian olive oil vendor gave a detailed training in olive oil tasting, and ended his presentation with a sample of his finest oil drizzled over some Haagen Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream.  The electric green of the oil popped so perfectly against the creamy, white, vanilla ice cream base – visually it was excellent.  But from the flavor perspective, my mind was fully blown.  Cold, creamy, sweet notes from the ice cream along with the bitter, grassy, herbaceous notes of the olive oil formed a totally complex, very exciting combination that I have been hooked on ever since.

My second encounter with this wonderful flavor combination came up a year ago, when I visited Kiler Ridge Olive Farm in Paso Robles, California.  As in my tasting at Sam’s Club a few years before, they finish their tasting with olive oil on top of Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Ice Cream, and again, it’s pure perfection.  Chris and I went back to Kiler Ridge last weekend for a nice Paso Robles day trip, where we enjoyed our little sample of pumpkin ice cream and olive oil, and picked up a new bottle of their olive oil to take home. 

This little treat is super easy to recreate at home, and I’ve been indulging in a few here and there throughout the week.  All you need is some great ice cream, and great olive oil, and a little salt (flaky Maldon salt works great, but any salt will do!) to sprinkle on top.  Because this is pretty decadent, I usually go for only 1 scoop of ice cream, a gentle drizzle of olive oil, and a small pinch of salt to top.  It’s the perfect little snack that’s really been hitting the spot during this quarantine fall.

I know this works really well with vanilla and pumpkin ice cream, but I’ve yet to try it with other flavors.  If anyone does, comment below to let me know if you liked it!  Extra Virgin Olive Oil drizzled over high quality ice cream is the treat that you deserve, so make yourself a little bowl and enjoy!

    Oh yum! I’ve seen it at Salt & Straw! I’ll have to try it, or I’ll just add olive oil on my ice cream at home.
